Simplifying vs. organizing

I had another thought regarding the goal of this blog.  Part of living simply is also being organized, so there may be times when I may have to add something to my life, rather than only purging things.  I will blog about those additions too, as I think they help me to simplify, even when it means another possession.

Simplifying vs. living green

As with all things, living simply has to be balanced with other things.  A strictly simple life can actually be worse for the environment.  It may be the simplest thing to throw everything away rather than hanging onto it in case you need it, but it's also rather wasteful.

As a result, my goal for this blog is to simplify my life, but also not at the expense of being wasteful or increasing my carbon footprint.  I think these two things have to be balanced against one another.

New year, new beginning

Some weeks ago, I decided that I was going to start this blog back up in 2015.  In fact, part of my New Year's resolution is to do so.

My New Year's resolution this year is much different than usual.  Usually I resolve to work more on my own writing, to finish website edits, to read a specific list of books or a certain number of classics.  After a difficult year, though, I'm pretty much tired of how complicated my life has become.  So this year, my New Year's resolution is to make my life simpler.

How to use less energy at home

While writing an article for a client I ran into this amazing infographic:

50 Cost-Efficient Ways To Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly

A lot of the suggestions in this infographic would be really easy to implement in your household, and some things you may already do.  I already clean with vinegar and wash the majority of my laundry on cold, and I'm considering using soap nuts instead of detergent for most things.  I've also been considering getting a power strip to plug my TV and Blu-Ray player into, so that I can turn it off when I'm not watching anything.

What about you?  What do you already do to save energy in your house, and what else could you do?

Help with decluttering

At some point here I need to get back to my original plan of decluttering, one day and one item at a time.  Honestly I think I'll be making it my New Year's resolution and doing a reboot on January 1st.  In the meantime, though, check out this infographic to help you make a decision of whether to keep or get rid of something:

This Clever Infographic Will Help You Declutter Your Entire House In Just One Month!

Be sure to check out the second or third pages, too, which have additional suggestions for helping you declutter.

Day 5: iPhone/tablet speaker

What I purged

It's been a long time since I purged anything or posted about it, but I was cleaning and reorganizing my room at my new place last weekend, and realized I didn't have much room on the narrow bookshelf that serves as a nightstand for me.  I hardly ever use this little battery-powered speaker, despite its clever design, which also serves as an easel for your tablet or iPhone.

Getting back to 365

The other day I set aside something to get rid of, so I think I may be sufficiently settled in now to get back to the original purpose of this blog: to get rid of things and simplify my life.

On the surface I have fewer things now, since I moved out, but in reality I still have a lot to go through, mostly things at my old house.  Some of it is jointly owned between me and my husband, and we both need to go through them, but other things are mine.  I won't be able to (or want to) bring everything with me, so it's time to start going through things.

Reflections on a simple life

A couple months now into my new life, I have brought more of my belongings with me.  I haven't had a lot of time to go through things, since I have been so busy with work -- I am a nanny and work a lot more during the summer, when the kids are out of school -- but the little I have done, and the things I have bought for my new life, have caused me to revisit my assumptions about a simple life.

Starting over

Over the last couple days, I moved into what I think should be my home for the foreseeable future.  I had been staying with a friend for the past month or so, with basically nothing more than a week or so's worth of clothes, my computer, my phone, and maybe a few other things.  In a way, I proved to myself that I could live with very little, but at the same time, I also realized that I don't want to live with that little.

SimpLIFEfy 365... backwards

I guess it's time to spill the beans and explain why this blog fizzled out so quickly.  It wasn't that I stopped going through my things; it was that I wasn't in a position to go through anything anymore, as very little of my stuff is actually with me.

In some ways, it's like simplifying everything, all at once, and then adding back what I actually want and miss -- kind of like the guy in the book Stuffocation who packed everything he owned into boxes, and then only took out what he actually needed in his day-to-day life.  My stuff isn't boxed up in another room, but it's accessible if I need it... only, for the most part, I haven't.

Days 2 and 3 updates -- and others

I have a couple of updates regarding previous days' purges, and an update on the blog in general.

Day 4: Belts and a scarf

What I purged

After debating over the cat castle, I was feeling mentally exhausted by the prospect of purging, so I had a hard time deciding what to get rid of.  Ultimately I chose something easy, something I know I don't need or even really use: belts.

Day 3: Cat castle

What I purged

This cat castle has clearly seen better days: It's scratched bare in places, the layer of fleecy material on the top is loose in one corner, and it's covered in fur.  But this is a different sort of post than the other two, because I'm not sure if we're getting rid of it yet.

Day 2: Purses

What I purged

Today I went through the next thing that has been on my mind: my purse collection.  I have a tendency to keep my old purses when I get a new daily bag, plus I have some that I was only using for special occasions -- which turned out to be only a couple of times a year.

Day 1: My sock drawer

Not that I got rid of my whole sock drawer -- but I did go through it.  I was inspired to do my sock drawer first because the author of Stuffocation, the book that inspired me to embark on this challenge in the first place, devoted several paragraphs to discussing what he'd reduced his sock drawer to.

Get ready, get set...

Talk about simplifying: I had to finish taxes and get that out of the way before I could even think about tackling my plan of getting rid of something every day.  I was up all night, and only had about three or four hours of sleep around midday before I went to work today, but now that that's done I feel SO much lighter.

The problem with too much stuff

A week ago, Barnes & Noble offered the book Stuffocation as their Nook Daily Find.  In reading the description, I found the concept -- that we are overworking ourselves and stressing ourselves out with our too-materialistic society -- intriguing.  I don't usually get into self-help books, but this one seemed worth the money, especially since I have been feeling the urge to simplify my life a bit lately: As I'm sure most people do, I often feel like I have too much clutter that I don't know what to do with, and when you pack that into a 2-bedroom, 750-square-foot bungalow and a basement used mostly for storage, it can get pretty oppressive at times.
