Day 16: Too-small riding boots

What I purged

I was given these boots last summer.  They are nice boots by Ariat, one of the best-known companies that make riding apparel.  They are brand new and my size, but they seem to run small and don't really fit me very well.  It's unfortunate because they really are nice boots, and I can ALWAYS use boots.  Riding and just barn stuff in general is hard on boots, and I seem to go through a pair of boots every year or two.

Day 15: My old (and uncomfortable) desk chair

What I purged

Last weekend, I was at Goodwill when I found -- quite unexpectedly -- a great vintage chair to go with my desk.  I've been through several chairs over the years, and have found most to be uncomfortable.  I haven't been happy with this chair, pictured above, for some time, so when I saw the new one I jumped on it (not literally).

Day 14: Coffee table and end table

 What I purged

In my new life, in my new studio apartment, a lot of furniture is one thing I do not need.  I have a storage unit where I can keep family things and other stuff I don't want to get rid of, but I'm trying to minimize what makes the cut.

Reusing and repurposing: Is it worth it?

I blogged yesterday about ways to keep things out of the landfill.  But because this blog is primarily about simplifying, I have to address the elephant in the room: Is it really simpler to reuse and repurpose your trash and items that have lost their usefulness?

Take the example of mason jars, for example.  You get jars with all sorts of things: jam, pickles, spaghetti sauce, salsa, you name it.  If you were to keep every single jar, you could quickly fill your cabinets with nothing else.  You could use jars as drinking glasses, food storage, vases, and pretty much anything else you could think of.

And while this is a cool idea, and very green, the truth is...

Keeping things out of the landfill

Before I get to work on the posts of things I'm getting rid of, I thought I would share this article about recycling that I saw yesterday.

Reduce, Reuse, Remove The Cellophane: Recycling Demystified

I don't know about you, but I always fret about what to put in the recycling can.  Ever since I started recycling a little over a year ago, I really like it, and wish I could recycle a whole lot more than I actually can.

More to come

I've gotten a little behind on my blog again lately -- or rather, failed to catch up when I'd planned to -- primarily because I've been so busy with my summer schedule.  But I've actually been slowly amassing a pile of things to get rid of, too, even if I haven't blogged about it.  I have a lot of catching up to do, so stayed tuned in the next few days for more posts.

Downsizing is a lot of work!

Today my mom and I had a booth at a community garage sale.  I only just moved and haven't fully unpacked or gone through everything yet, so I only had a few things to sell, and mostly big things.  I sold mostly smaller items, but not the big ones I wanted most to sell: an end table and coffee table I no longer have space for (coming in a later post).

Downsizing, as it turns out, is a lot of work.

Day 13: TOO MANY JARS

What I purged

One thing I've discovered through packing, moving, and unpacking, is that I have too many jars for my limited storage space in the new place.  I had been saving jars, thinking I might use them for something, but that's a mode of thought I can't afford now, in a studio with limited storage space.  So away they go!

The water bottle I'm also getting rid of crept into this picture.  It's a nice water bottle but the mouth is too small and I want a top I can drink out of without unscrewing the whole thing.

And this is why we downsize

I moved this past week.  I've gone from having an entire house last year, to a tiny bedroom, and then to another tiny bedroom but with part of a basement for my use as well.  Now I've just moved into a tiny studio.  I literally have an eat-in kitchen, a tiny bathroom, and a small main room -- and that's it.

And this is why downsizing is important.

Day 12: These curtain rod finials

What I purged

Sometimes things just aren't necessary, as was the case with this stuff.

Last summer I got a new bed that was missing the finials on the tops of the metal posts, so I got these finials from IKEA to cover the empty holes.  But they didn't really fit well, so after a couple months I did away with them -- I just hadn't gotten rid of them yet.  It's time for them to go, though.

I also have a bathroom cup and a few little wire baskets I don't actually like, a couple plastic food storage containers (I no longer use plastic but my mom gave me these anyway), and a water bottle that the dishwasher damaged.  (The water bottle is fine, but the laminate coloring is all peeling, and I don't have the patience or the time to peel it all off.)

Day 11: A broken mug

I really need to do some catching up, so for a while these posts will be coming two or three a day.

What I purged

In December I broke the handle of a holiday mug while I was washing it after the very first use, so I was pretty sad and have hung onto it far longer than I should have as a result.  For a while I considered using it as a candle holder, but I have to admit that I don't really even burn candles all that often, so having even one more candle holder seems ridiculous.  Is it more ridiculous to keep it and have it take up space, or throw it away and feel wasteful?  I don't know, but I'm thinking it's better off out of my life than cluttering it up.

Serious downsizing

I'll be doing some serious downsizing here very soon.  A few things are coming together at just the right time to force it in all areas of my life.

I'll be moving into my own studio apartment.  I've been living with roommates for the past year or more, ever since my husband and I separated.  (There -- that's the first time I've mentioned it directly on any of my blogs -- was that so hard?)  I'm tired of roommates, though, so I got myself a little studio apartment.  And I mean, little.  It's in the area I wanted though, and I'll my own kitchen and bathroom for the first time in over a year, so it's worth it simply to be able to stop feeling like I'm crashing on someone's couch (which I'm not, but that's what it feels like when you live in a basement and don't have easy access to a kitchen or shower).

Going through my clothes

It took until last week, once taxes were done, but I finally went through my clothes again.  I actually feel like I just did this, but it was months ago and since I have a small closet and not a lot of room for clothes storage, it fills up fast.

I always start out with the best intentions, but that wanes while I go through things so I actually think decluttering is -- at least for me -- best done in short spurts.

Spring cleaning fever

I've been so busy that I haven't paid much attention to this blog in a while.  I have tossed a few things into my donation bag, but each time I've thought, "I'll write that up later," and each time, I've forgotten what it even was I got rid of.  I'll have to go through my donation bag sometime soon to find out what all those things were.

Anyway, I haven't gotten rid of enough, and I also did a little shopping a couple weeks ago for a special event, and wanted to go clothes shopping so badly once I saw all the lovely, soft, flowy clothes that are popular this year.  As a result I'm feeling like it's time to go through my clothes again, and get rid of a whole bunch so that I can justify buying some new things.

Day 10: Miscellaneous bathroom stuff

What I purged

No picture on this one, but when I was cleaning up my messy room and bookshelf last night, I also pulled a few things out of my bathroom, things that I either didn't like or hadn't been using: a bathroom cup I got over the summer, and two wire baskets that I'd been using in one of my drawers, but that didn't work very well because the spacing between the wires is too big.

Day 9: And this mess, too

What I purged

Yesterday was a day for going through messes.  After I went through all the junk on the counter in my bedroom, I tackled this shelf, which has been full of miscellaneous junk since I moved in.  I hadn't put the books back on it because I wasn't sure where I wanted it to go.  More recently I decided I wanted to use it as a shelf for shoes, hats and scarves, and other things, as I've put it in a little hallway or entry way to my bedroom and bathroom.

Day 8: This mess

What I purged

I've had quite the mess accumulating in my room for the last couple months.  Last night I finally went through it.

Good advice

Recently I went to a Chinese restaurant with my mom, and at the end of the meal my fortune cookie told me this:

At first I thought it was funny that I got it when my mom seemed like the better recipient for such advice.  She is incredibly resistant to spending money unless she thinks she's getting a good deal -- then she'll buy all manner of unnecessary things.

Day 7: Food

What I purged

I am pretty bad about letting food go to waste.  Sometimes something is just slightly on the old side, and I won't get rid of it because "it might still be okay," but then I won't eat it, either, because hey -- it also might not.

So my goal last weekend was to get rid of ALL the old food, and to be honest about whether I would use it still or not.  I cleared out quite a bit.  The only borderline food I kept was some eggnog, which I did have more of that night (but the rest of which will go into the trash tonight), and some cheese that was a little old for my tastes but probably not too old for my rat.

What I did with it

There was no way around this one, so I tossed all the old food and put any recyclable containers into recycling.

Final notes

I'm only two weeks into 2015, and I'm already one week behind.  This is not promising!  I'll get caught up this week, though.  I actually already have ideas of things I want to go through and possibly get rid of, so getting caught up is more about finding the time than finding the stuff.

Day 6: Rodent cages

What I purged

I've been collecting rodent cages, so I cleaned up all the ones I'm not currently using and I'm going to get rid of them.

I got a rat back in... oh, October, I think?  I started out with him in the purple and white cage, which the family I nanny for had given to me to find a home for.  It was their daughter's late gerbils' cage, and was clearly too small for my rat, so I ended up getting the larger white cage from a friend.  That was still a little small for him, so I got an even bigger cage, and my friend doesn't want her cage back.  The little carrying cage I'd had when I was younger, and took to house the crickets for my nanny kids' praying mantis when my parents sold their house a few months ago.

What I'll do with them

I don't have a use for any of these, and I could use the money, so I think I'm actually going to list them on Craigslist and see if I can make a few bucks -- maybe enough to put toward something else for my rat!

The rat foot in the last picture I was going to throw in with the cage, but I might just toss it, as I'd feel guilty giving it to anyone -- it's not that great quality, and has both alfalfa pellets and dried corn in it, which rats actually shouldn't have.

Final notes

I'll probably start by selling the gerbil/hamster stuff.  The larger white cage I feel a bit guilty about selling, since a friend gave it to me, so I may hold off and ask her again if she's sure she doesn't want it back!

Starting over: Day 5: Pajamas

What I purged

My pajama drawer has been in serious need of culling for some time.  I adore pajamas, and lately I've collected so many that my drawer of pajamas and loungewear is in danger of overflowing.  Even with the pictured pajamas removed from the drawer, everything barely fits.

Starting over: Day 4: These clothes

What I purged

As I was putting my laundry away a couple nights ago, I pulled several items off to put in my donations pile: a pink tank top that is simply too short for today's styles, a white tank top that has seen better days, and a black sweatshirt.

Starting over: Day 3: A lumpy pillow

What I purged

I'm not posting a picture of this one, mainly because it's so yellowed -- I feel somewhat embarrassed.  This pillow has been mostly used for decoration, which is why I've put up with its lumpiness for so long.  Besides, it's soft enough to be forgiven if not used on a regular basis.

Starting over: Day 2: Two sweaters

What I purged

On impulse, I pulled these two sweaters out of my closet.  They are beautiful sweaters, but they have started shedding copious amounts of chenille in the washing machine at my new place.  The blue one has gotten quite thin on the shoulders, and when I went to put the red one (just washed) away tonight after hanging it dry, it dropped red clumps of fuzz everywhere.  It also shedded all over two of my other sweaters, necessitating they be washed again, and this was with the gentlest possible cycle on the washing machine.

Starting over: Day 1: Clothes

What I purged

Since late summer or early fall, I've been collecting in a bag in my closet clothing items to get rid of.  On New Year's Eve Day, I finally went through these items.  I only returned two to my closet (a purse and a tank top), and the rest got photographed, cataloged, and sent to Goodwill.
